LOME, Togo (AP): Togo’s interior minister says former national team goalkeeper Charles Balogou and the five other victims of Saturday’s bus crash will be given a “heroes’ burial.”
During a visit to the families of the dead, interior minister and government spokesman Pascal Bodjona said Monday the six people were “martyrs of Togolese football.” A date for the burials is yet to be announced.
The bus carrying players and officials of topflight club Etoile Filante crashed on the way to a league game. It reportedly rolled several times before plunging into a ravine and catching fire.
Ten players who sustained burns were released from Lome Central Hospital on Monday. Goalkeeper Mama Souleyman said, “We are relieved to have escaped death but we are saddened by the loss of our colleagues.”
