PETALING JAYA: Selangor coach Irfan Bakti wants misfiring striker Francis Doe to start hitting the target.

The Liberian hitman, who was last season’s Golden Boot winner with 15 goals, has been raking up his assist count with the Red Giants but failed to break his duck after three games.

The 27-year-old provided the assist for S. Kunalan’s opener in the 2-1 win over his former team Terengganu at the Sultan Ismail Stadium on Tuesday. Amri Yahyah got the Red Giants’ second while the Turtles replied through Cameroonian striker Jean Owona.

But Irfan said that Doe’s main job was to score goals.

“Doe’s KPI is to score goals … but he’s been working hard for the team and I believe he’ll break his duck soon,” said Irfan. “I’m happy with his contribution to the team. His positioning has opened up space for other players to score but he also needs to start scoring.”

Irfan is also happy to see nippy winger Kunalan finally getting on the scoresheet. He is the Red Giants’ leading scorer with two goals in three matches.

“Maybe it was a tactical move for Kunalan to concentrate fully on the flanks when he was playing for Negri Sembilan,” said Irfan.

“He plays a different role with us now. I’ve given him a free role when we are on the attack and you can see that he is relishing the role as he has scored twice from inside the penalty box.”

Irfan has also told his midfielders “to be tidier when in possession and stay focused” when they host league leaders Pahang at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.
